WALKING BUS
Parklea Public School Walking School Bus – Helping our students travel safely to school
One of the most common road safety concerns voiced by school communities is the safety of students arriving and departing from school. Recent media coverage has highlighted these concerns with the introduction of a range of traffic enforcement regulations and fines.
Whilst the responsibility for traveling to and from school is primarily a parental one, our school community is proudly supporting the safety of our students by helping by promoting walking to school as a healthy alternative.
In May 2007 Parklea Public School, in a 3 way partnership with NorthWest Community Care Inc. and Landcom, introduced the formal Walking School Bus™ program to the Parklea Public School community.
The Walking School Bus™ is a group of students who walk to and from school along a safe and enjoyable set route, accompanied by a minimum of two parent/driver/ supervisors per ‘bus’. One parent ‘drives’ at the front of the bus while the other parent supervises at the rear of the bus. Additional parents may be added to the bus along the route. The walking bus picks up passengers along the way at designated bus stops. We have 3 Walking Buses.
The Walking School Bus™ program promotes physical activity, safe walking to and from school and a reduction of traffic congestion outside our busy school.
As part of its community participation program, Landcom provides sponsorship of this valuable program by providing: public liability insurance for the adults and students who travel on the buses; fluorescent jackets for bus passengers; printed travel record cards for all passengers, and token reinforcements for passengers.
NorthWest Community Care Inc. ensure that parent supervisors are provided training and support so that the risk for students traveling on a bus is minimized; assesses local traffic conditions, the distance students travel; provide strategies to address absences or unavailability of bus ‘drivers’ and supervisors; manage procedures for determining parental permission for student involvement, and manage daily participation in our Walking School Bus™ program.
